BMF Port Burgas AD signed a Grant for Project FE2WC

BMF Port Burgas AD signed a Grant Agreement under CEF-Transport-2023 for co-funding of Project „From East 2 West Connections“ (FE2WC)

On 7th of October 2024, BMF Port Burgas AD and the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), under the powers delegated by the European Commission, signed a Grant Agreement for co-funding of the Project „From East 2 West Connections” (Project number: 101175578 and Project acronym: 23-BG-TC-FE2WC).

The indicative amount of the eligible costs of the Project is EUR 10 762 760.00. Up to 85% of this amount or EUR 9 148 346.00 will be funded under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for Transport programme, priority “Projects on the Core Network” – Cohesion envelope. The other part of the investment will be financed by the Company using its own funds and bank loan if needed.

The project commenced on August 1, 2024, with BMF Port Burgas AD scheduled to complete its implementation by May 31, 2027.

The Project aims to improve the rail accessibility to the port of Burgas through the construction of new railway infrastructure at terminal Burgas West and terminal Burgas East-2 and to increase the modal shift in the port by improving the efficiency of the handling and shunting operations. The new investment initiative of BMF Port Burgas AD includes:

  • Construction of a new marshalling yard at port terminal Burgas West featuring six railway tracks—two operational and four buffer tracks—ranging from 565 to 822 meters in length, with a combined total of approximately 3,975 meters. The buffer tracks will facilitate rail traffic between Terminals Burgas East-2 and Burgas West, while the operational tracks will be exclusively dedicated to Burgas West’s rail services. This new railway infrastructure will be dedicated to handling container and bulk cargo trains. The new operating tracks will allow the overall capacity of terminal Burgas West to handle up to 102 wagons per day. Shifting most handling operations to the new tracks will eliminate interference between shunting and port operations, streamlining container-related activities and improving overall performance.
  • Construction of two new railway tracks and a scissors crossover at port terminal Burgas East-2: The new tracks, measuring 614 meters and 412 meters, will serve berths 16, 17, 18, and 19, dedicated to handling dry bulk and general cargo. They will significantly boost the terminal’s operational capacity, allowing it to accommodate up to 166 wagons per day, enhancing overall efficiency and throughput at Burgas East-2.
  • Construction of a new railway track connecting terminal Burgas West and terminal Burgas East-2: The new 456 m long track will provide additional capacity supporting the growth of rail traffic. It will also ensure uninterrupted operations by providing an alternative route, safeguarding against potential disruptions in case of infrastructure failure on the existing tracks.

BMF Port Burgas AD is committed to minimizing its environmental footprint by adopting innovative solutions such as electric shunting locomotives and a direct rail connection to inland rail-road terminals. In the future, the new port infrastructure, equipped with state-of-the-art machinery and technology, will enable seamless cargo transfers between ships and rail, significantly reducing harmful emissions and supporting greener logistics.
